York RI RUFC vc Leeds Corinthians

I am part of a new Sports photography group at York Photographic Society and our first trip was to the York Railway Institute (RI) rugby union match against Leeds Corinthians at the weekend.

I realised on the day I'd never even been to a rugby match before (which is pretty unthinkable, given that I grew up in Tiger country, namely Leicester), let alone photographed one. Fortunately there does seem to have been rather a lot on the television of late, something of a sore point for England fans, of course, so I had a good idea what to expect.

The game seemed to get off to a fairly tentative start, but RI drew first blood, scoring the only try of the first half. The game opened up in the second half, with a try for both teams before RI took control, scoring twice more and building up a healthy 24-7 lead. Corinthians scored twice in quick succession late in the second half to set up a close finish but RI saw the game out with a late penalty and a final score of 27-21.
